Sick hamster, went to ER Vet,eye bulging out,eye ointment given. Not eating or drinking.

Black bear hamster. My daughters Black bear hamster is dying. His eye bulged out yesterday,I took him to an ER Vet last night, they treated the eye, heart and lungs sounded good. Gone down hill from there. Now he is very quiet. On his last leg. =(
He is only 1 year old. Short of a miracle there really is no way he is going to pull through. My daughter is so sad, as are my husband and myself. He was such a nice little guy and could be handled and was friendly.

Some tips...
by: Tiffany

Hi Stephanie,

I'm very sorry to hear the bad news about your hamster. I hope your family is handling the loss well, especially the children.

I'm not medically trained in any way so I can only provide some tips on prevention out of good judgment.

Since you visited the Vet, one important thing to do is ask him or her what might be the cause of the illness. If it's something related to their diet, living environment, etc. You can change that so it wouldn't hurt your next pet hamster.

Secondly, hamsters can be very delicate. Once they catch a disease, they could be gone in 48 hours. And it could be totally out of your control.

Early recognition of a disease may save their life. Start by spending time with your hamster everyday to recognize their normal behavior. They should be actively eating, tending to their cage, and looking alert. When you notice your hamster behaving strangely, you might be on to something. Observe them more. And if the condition worsens, bring your hamster to the vet.

Lastly, if you don't have a trusted vet. It's a great idea to bookmark one ahead of time. Read reviews on them online. When you need one, you'll know exactly where you want to take your pet.

Again, sorry for your loss. I hope your hamster had a happy time with your family.

Goodbye sweet boy.
by: Stephanie

Our sweet boy Twinkle fluff passed yesterday afternoon. When I took him to the vet the night before, they treated the bulging eye. Ointment was given. I knew it was more than his eye. He was skinny under all that fur. We spent time with him everyday,he had a large clean cage and fresh food and water. We gave him a good life. Not sure how old he was when we got him? But my husband thinks he was about a year and a half old when he passed. It happened fast so I guess really that is a blessing. My daughter is very sad of course. We are going to bury him in the back yard tonight. And we are going to look for another fury friend for my daughter.
